Detailed findings
Children
1,502,040 children from 1,073,120 families attended a CCS approved service.
1,437,520 children from 1,011,600 families were allocated a Customer Reference Number (CRN) by Services Australia, down 0.7% of children from December quarter 2024. The remainder of this report analyses this cohort.
48.8% of children aged 0 to 5 and 34.8% of children aged 0 to 12 used approved care.
Of children in care:
- 58.8% (845,190 children) attended Centre Based Day Care
- 38.4% (552,020 children) attended Outside School Hours Care
- 4.7% (67,190 children) attended Family Day Care.
New South Wales had the largest share of children attending approved care, at 31.8% or 456,840 children. While the number of children in care remained virtually unchanged in Victoria, the number of children in care decreased across all other states when compared to the same quarter the previous year.
44,620 children accessed Additional Child Care Subsidy.

67,860 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children attended approved care, up 4.1% from December quarter 2024.
New South Wales had the largest share of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children attending approved care, at 37.3%.
The majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children using care attended Centre Based Day Care, at 68.7%. This compares with 58.8% for all children in care.
29.1% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children using approved care attended Outside School Hours Care, compared to 38.4% of all children.

Families
1,011,600 families used approved care, a decline of 0.5% compared to December quarter 2024.
The number of families using Centre Based Day Care decreased by -1.3% (-9,280 families). The number of families using Outside School Hours Care increased by 1.3% (5,110 families).
New South Wales had the largest share of families using Centre Based Day Care, at 32.5% (224,300 families).

Services
15,271 approved services operated during the quarter.
Centre Based Day Care services represented 64.1% of all services, with 9,786 services. Outside School Hours Care services represented 33.5% of all services, with 5,111 services.
Compared to December quarter 2024:
- the number of Centre Based Day Care services increased by 2.2% (215 services)
- the number of Outside School Hours Care increased by 0.4% (20 services)
- the number of Family Day Care decreased by -3.1% (-11 services).

Usage
On average, children attended 27.6 hours of care per week, up 0.7% from December quarter 2024.
Of Centre Based Day Care services:
- Northern Territory had the highest average weekly hours, at 38.9 hours
- Tasmania had the lowest average weekly hours, at 28.0 hours.

Fees
The average hourly fee was $13.75, up 4.6% from December quarter 2024.
Outside School Hours Care had the lowest average hourly fee at $9.75 per hour. Centre Based Day Care had the highest at $14.40 per hour.

The hourly rate cap for children below school age at Centre Based Day Care services was $14.63. With the exception of the Australian Capital Territory ($16.10) and Western Australia ($14.70), states and territories had average hourly fees below the hourly rate cap for Centre Based Day Care.
Nationally, 61.1% of Centre Based Day Care services had an average hourly fee under or at the hourly fee cap. This compares to 83.9% in Outside School Hours Care under a fee cap of $12.81, and 48.1% under a cap of $13.56 in Family Day Care.

Subsidies
The total estimated expenditure by the Australian Government was $3.98 billion. This includes Child Care Subsidy and Additional Child Care Subsidy.
Additional Child Care Subsidy accounted for $221.7 million of this.
The total estimated expenditure was up 2.4% from December quarter 2024.
The majority of Child Care Subsidy went to families using Centre Based Day Care, at $3.43 billion or 86.2%.
8.7% went to families using Outside School Hours Care.
