Unannounced spot checks rolling out nationally

To make sure the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is being administered correctly, we are performing unannounced visits to conduct spot checks.

We’re increasing our unannounced visits to early childhood education and care (ECEC) services.

These visits help ensure services meet their legal obligations and administer CCS correctly.

At the visit, authorised officers from the Department of Education will look at records and administrative processes, including how attendance is tracked. These visits do not replace routine checks carried out by state or territory regulators. If safety or quality issues are identified during spot checks, they will be reported to the relevant state or territory regulator.

Following a successful pilot in October and November 2025, spot checks are now being rolled out nationally. Any registered service across Australia can receive a spot check.

Spot checks are about lifting standards and giving families confidence that services are safe and compliant.

This program is part of the department’s broader commitment to improving the integrity of the Child Care Subsidy and to uplift quality and safety
