Privacy Statement

Your personal information is protected by law, including under the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act).

Personal information

Personal information is information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable. Personal information includes an individual’s name and contact details.

Sensitive information

Sensitive information is a subset of personal information. It includes information or an opinion about your racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs or affiliations, philosophical beliefs, membership of associations or unions, sexual orientation or practices, criminal record, or health, genetic or biometric information.

Purpose of collecting your information

Your personal information provided in this complaint form is collected by the Australian Government Department of Education (the department) for the purposes of assessing, investigating, resolving, and reporting your complaint and related purposes.

If you do not provide some or all of the personal information requested, it may not be possible for the department to properly investigate or respond. Where possible, the department will make complainants aware of these limitations.

If you are seeking to make a complaint on behalf of someone else (who is not a minor), that person must have read and understood this privacy statement and have provided their permission for you to make the complaint on their behalf. Please do not provide their personal information without their consent.

The department may collect information about the complainant from other individuals or organisations involved in the complaint for the above purposes.

Disclosure of your personal information

Where necessary and appropriate, the department may disclose the personal information you have provided in your complaint to the individuals or organisations named in the complaint.

The department may disclose the personal information you have provided to other bodies investigating matters relevant to your complaint where necessary, such as the Australian Federal Police; the Australian Taxation Office; Commonwealth, State and Territory regulators; and other Commonwealth, State and Territory government agencies. Your personal information may be disclosed to relevant review bodies such as the Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Your personal information may also be disclosed to other parties where you have agreed, or where it is otherwise permitted under the Privacy Act 1988. Your personal information is unlikely to be disclosed to overseas recipients unless your complaint relates to an overseas contracted service provider of the department.
