On 18 August 2026, the department released a consultation paper on potential reforms to strengthen the Australian National University Act 1991.
The Department of Education sought views from students, staff, alumni, higher education stakeholders and the Canberra community on how the governance arrangements established by the Australian National University Act 1991 could be strengthened in response to the questions in this Consultation Paper. Submissions closed on 1 September 2026.
