Review of the Australian Research Council Act 2001

An independent review into the Australian Research Council Act 2001 (ARC Review) will consider the role and purpose of the Australian Research Council within the university research system so it can meet current and future needs.

The Review will consider how the ARC’s legislation can be developed to provide clarity on objectives and processes to drive renewed focus within the organisation. The Review will also consider whether the scope of the current legislation is sufficient to support an effective and efficient university research system and provide recommendations.

On 30 August 2022 the Hon Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education announced the ARC Review. The Minister for Education appointed Professor Margaret Sheil AO (Panel Chair), Professor Susan Dodds and Professor Mark Hutchinson to manage the ARC Review.

The independent ARC Review Panel was tasked with the following Terms of Reference.

ARC Review Consultation

On Wednesday 9 November 2022, the independent ARC Review Panel has invited the public’s participation in its consultation process.

The ARC Review Panel is seeking input on how the ARC can be strengthened and enhanced within the current funding envelope with a view to ensuring the vital role the ARC plays within the Australian research ecosystem is recognised and supported into the future.

The consultation period opens 4:00 pm AEDT on Wednesday 9 November 2022 and will close 11:59 pm AEDT on Wednesday 14 December 2022.

Submissions can be made through the online survey platform using the link below. Your submission will need to meet government accessibility requirements (Terms and Conditions for public submissions). Please advise whether you consent to your submission being made publicly available when submitting. Submissions which do not state that they can be made publicly available will not be published on the Department’s website.
