The HELP Debt Reduction Program for Very Remote Teachers supports eligible teachers working in very remote communities by helping to reduce their HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) debt.
The Australian Government Department of Education has developed a suite of communication assets to support stakeholders, including state and territory education departments, peak bodies and First Nations organisations, to share information about the program with early-career teachers.

You may be eligible for an indexation waiver if you:
- have completed an initial teacher qualification and
- are working or have worked as a teacher at a school, pre-school or centre-based day care in a very remote area as defined by the ABS Remoteness Structure and
- have an outstanding HELP debt when you commenced working in a very remote area.
To be eligible for a HELP debt reduction you must meet the above and have completed 1,400 days of teaching full time within a 6-year period. Teachers who do not meet the full service requirement may still qualify where exceptional circumstances apply.

- HELP debt reduction
- Indexation waivers on outstanding HELP debt
You may be eligible if you:
- have completed an initial teacher qualification and
- are working or have worked as a teacher at a school, pre-school or centre‑based day care in a very remote area as defined by the ABS Remoteness Structure and
- have an outstanding HELP debt when you commenced working in a very remote area.
When to apply:
You can apply for a HELP debt reduction when you have completed the required service period. It is recommended you apply for an indexation waiver at the same time – you’ll only need to apply once to receive the same benefit.
