Student Resilience and Wellbeing

The Australian Government recognises that schools play a vital role in promoting the social and emotional development and wellbeing of young Australians.

Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development and this is optimised by the provision of safe, supportive and respectful learning environments. Schools share this responsibility with the whole community.

Not only do confident, resilient children with a capacity for emotional intelligence perform better academically, these skills can also contribute to the creation of strong social bonds and supportive communities, and the maintenance of healthy relationships and responsible lifestyles.

Broadly, the Australian Government is improving student wellbeing by:

  • Helping students develop capabilities which promote health and wellbeing and lead to success in life (e.g., Australian Curriculum )
  • Ensuring the school and home learning environments are supported (e.g., safe & supportive schools)
  • Strengthening engagement with parents and the wider community (e.g., parent engagement)

Within this broad approach, specific initiatives include:

Safe and Supportive Schools

The Australian Government plays a leadership role in national school education priorities, including providing national frameworks, policies, programmes and initiatives that support school authorities. As part of a national approach to supporting schools to build safe school communities, all education ministers endorsed the revised National Safe Schools Framework in December 2010.

The government continues to work with state and territory government and non- government education authorities to ensure that student resilience and wellbeing is a priority in all aspects of Australian school education policy and practice.

Cybersafety

The Australian Government recognises online safety is an important issue for Australian schools and families. There are many Government cybersafety initiatives that provide information for students, teachers, parents and the broader community on creating safe online environments. The following resources provide information for students, teachers, parents and the broader community about creating safe online environments:
