We want to hear from you – learners, families, all educators and leaders across the early childhood, schooling and tertiary sectors, community members, allied health professionals and organisations who want to help make a positive impact on First Nations education in Australia.
The purpose of this public consultation process is to gather input from the community to inform the development of the First Nations Education Policy. You can make your submission by responding to a set of questions in the survey, or by uploading a response in written, video, or audio format.

For more information about the First Nations Education Policy, including questions you may wish to consider in your submission, please refer to the Discussion Paper. The Discussion Paper provides information on why a new First Nations Education Policy is needed, the proposed purpose, scope, and objectives of the Policy, and how the Australian Department of Education (the department) is developing the Policy in partnership with First Nations organisations, state and territory governments, and the non-government education sector.
Personal information and privacy
By providing a submission, you are consenting to the department collecting personal information. Any personal information you choose to provide will be handled in accordance with the privacy statement. If you do choose to provide your consent, you can withdraw this consent at any time prior to the publication of submissions.
You can do this by contacting the department at FirstNationsEducationPolicy@education.gov.au and requesting that we remove your submission from a). publication or b). publication and consideration. Please note that if you have not provided any contact information for the department to contact you, you will need to provide us with the Response ID provided to you at the end of your survey. The Response ID will allow us to identify your response and remove your submission from publication or from the process completely.
Personal information that you may want to provide includes your name, contact details, opinions or feedback, commentary, whether you identify as Aboriginal and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, which state or territory you live in, how remote your location is, whether you are a current or past student, your relationship to the education system, and any other personal information (including sensitive information) you volunteer about yourself in the free-text fields.
Purpose of collecting your information
Your personal information is collected by the department and its contracted service providers for the purposes of:
- informing or contributing to the development of the First Nations Education Policy and any related products
- contacting you for your consent to include direct quotes from your submission
- communicating with you about the development of the First Nations Education Policy
- analysing and reporting on your feedback and insights from the submission or survey and any additional consultation processes you agree to take part in
- understanding the demographics and distribution of respondents participating in the consultations on the First Nations Education Policy. This information may be used for reporting purposes but will be de-identified prior to being published
- creating evaluation and reporting material (this material will not include personal information, unless consent has been provided)
- publishing your submission on the department's website where consent has been given (see further information below about publication).
Consent from young people under 15 years of age
Young people under the 15 years of age will need to obtain parental consent from a parent or legal guardian.
Publication of submissions
The department will publish submissions on this webpage after the submission process closes. You will be asked if you consent to the department publishing your submission. When making a submission, respondents will be asked to select one of the following options:
- Published with your name and organisation attributed to your submission. By agreeing to this, you also consent to the disclosure of your personal information in the submission to any overseas recipients. Contact details will be removed from the submission prior to publication.
- Published anonymously
- Not published.
Please note that respondents under the age of 15 will not be asked this question. If you are under 15, the department will not publish your responses or any identifying information. However, your response will still be used in the development of the Policy.
