The Education Funding System (EFS) is the Department of Education’s (the departments) new digital platform designed to modernise the education digital ecosystem, delivering simple, secure, and connected digital services for the schools and higher education sectors.
The department administers $51 billion of funding each year to Australian schools and higher education institutions. This funding supports the delivery of high-quality education for all students.
We know Australia’s schools and higher education institutions rely on the timely and accurate payment of government funding. The existing technology and platforms currently used by the department to collect data and administer schools and higher education funding are ageing and limited in their capabilities.
The Australian Government has made a major investment into the development of a new modern technology platform to improve the way the department collects data, calculates entitlements and makes payments to schools and higher education providers.
This is an ambitious and complex project that is critical to ensuring we continue to make accurate payments on time, modernise and uplift processes for both our departmental staff and importantly reduce the administrative burden for you. The EFS will support a modern and more streamlined user experience and importantly, meet new modern IT security requirements.

Stronger, faster, more secure funding for Australia’s education providers.
The EFS will deliver:
- a single online platform for education providers across the school and higher education institutions
- an enhanced user experience, with self-service functionality, providing easily accessible information on funding, payments and data collections
- greater cyber security measures that safeguard sensitive information and provide enhanced security protection.
