Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) was a significant, targeted investment to strengthen Australia’s research commercialisation system and support the translation of research into real world economic and social benefits. Fostering stronger collaboration between universities, industry and investors, the program helped build a national pipeline of high potential research aligned with national priorities.
Program update
As part of the 2026–27 Budget, the Australian Government decided that funding for new AEA projects would not continue beyond the 2025–26 financial year. The decision contributes to the Government’s approach to responsible economic management and fiscal repair.
Since commencing in 2023, more than $240 million has been committed to support over 400 research commercialisation projects, building capability, partnerships, and impact across national priority areas.
All current AEA grants continue unchanged - including milestones, payments, and reporting requirements. Subject to individual project timelines, these projects are expected to run until 30 June 2028.
The Government continues to make substantial, long-term investments in research and development, recognising research as critical to productivity, economic growth and Australia’s future prosperity.
Across Government, total investment in research and development is projected to reach approximately $15.1 billion in 2025-26.
