What inspired you to study a teaching degree?

I was inspired to study a teaching degree because of my lifelong love of learning. Educating others enables me to share my passion for my subject area whilst developing the inherent potential of students from all walks of life. It provides meaning, challenge, and engagement in so many different ways.

How do you think the scholarship you have received will help you achieve your goals?

The scholarship has enabled me to dedicate more of my focus towards my studies. Particularly during difficult periods such as placement when the time commitment is particularly high, this has enabled me to devote all of my effort towards teaching.

Is there a past teacher who inspired you or who you have positive memories of and why?

Yes, I was inspired by my teacher of Ancient History during my final years of high school. For the majority of high school, I was disengaged, and my enjoyment of schooling had declined as a result. My teacher helped me explore my love of history and was instrumental in helping me rediscover my interest in schooling, putting me on the path I’m on now.

What are the qualities that you think makes a good teacher?

I think above all else, patience is a key quality of a good teacher. Students are going through a time of their lives that is defined by change, uncertainty, and many other challenges. While we have all gone through this period, it does become gradually removed from our perspective. An effective teacher will use their patience to understand and connect with the broad diversity of students in their classrooms and help them succeed.

What are you looking forward to most about being a teacher?

Helping students to develop their potential would be particularly meaningful to me. Seeing students learn, grow, and change into adults is an opportunity that is unique to teaching.

What has been the best advice you’ve received while studying teaching?

To be fair but firm. Teaching does involve a strong element of classroom management and this can be a particularly difficult area, especially for new teachers.

What advice would you give to anyone considering studying teaching?

Know what you want to get out of teaching. The broad diversity of schools and the various environments are enormous. Different schools offer different challenges.

What advice would you give to anyone applying for the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program?

Just to apply! I didn’t think that I would be accepted but I was! The scholarship could change the course of your studies and make your journey significantly smoother.
