What inspired you to study a teaching degree?

I’ve always been around younger family members and really enjoyed spending time with them. From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with kids. At 13, I started working as an assistant at a tutoring centre, and that’s when I felt that teaching was for me. I loved going to work, helping kids learn, and watching them grow.

How do you think the scholarship you have received will help you achieve your goals?

The scholarship has been instrumental in helping me reach my goals by easing the financial pressures of university. With this support, I reduce the number of work hours I need to take on, allowing me to focus more on my studies and fully engage in the university experience. This has enabled me to make the most of my time at university, both academically and personally.

Is there a past teacher who inspired you or who you have positive memories of and why?

My motivation to become a teacher is deeply inspired by the educators who shaped my own learning journey. I was fortunate to have teachers who were passionate about their subjects and genuinely loved what they did. I vividly remember being captivated by my year 11 chemistry teacher, whose humour and creative imitations of chemical bonds made the material come alive and kept me engaged. This experience taught me the power of enthusiasm and connection in the classroom.

What are the qualities that you think makes a good teacher?

Compassion, empathy, and patience are essential qualities in teaching. I believe it is important to recognize that students are more than just learners—they are individuals with unique backgrounds and perspectives that enrich the classroom.

What are you looking forward to most about being a teacher?

I'm excited to have the opportunity to teach my own class, connect with my students, and play a part in enriching their journey!

Are there any teachers in your family or friendship circle – if so, what advice did they give you?

No one in our family had pursued teaching before. However, my sister is also currently working towards her Master of Teaching. It's been fascinating to share our experiences and discuss our placement journeys.

What has been the best advice you’ve received while studying teaching?

Enjoy placements, embrace the journey and everything else that comes with it.

What advice would you give to anyone considering studying teaching?

Give it a try! Apply for volunteering opportunities or roles that allow you to mentor, teach, or work with children and see if it’s something you enjoy. Find the subjects you're truly passionate about and specialise in them! Teaching is a rewarding and noble profession, and if it’s the right fit for you, I believe your passion will shine through.

What advice would you give to anyone applying for the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program?

Definitely apply for the scholarship! At first, I was unsure too, but the application process is quick and straightforward, with plenty of support and helpful information along the way. Give it a try—you might be pleasantly surprised by the outcome!
