Celebrating 10 years of the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program

Learning a language made fun thanks to ELLA

As we commemorate a milestone year at ELLA, we reflect on a decade of making learning a language fun and look towards opportunities to expand in the future.

ELLA is a free digital language learning program designed for preschoolers, delivered by Education Services Australia.

Young children can learn up to 13 languages via an interactive, play-based app to help develop their understanding of language and new cultures. Statistics collated by the ELLA team have shown:

  • 70% of educators reported children experienced an increased interest in other cultures
  • 98% of educators reported children were engaged using the apps, and
  • 2 in 3 parents reported their children used at least one word of the new language learnt at home.

In 2026, ELLA is expanding to all eligible Foundation - Year 2 Australian schools as part the Teacher Resource Hubs initiative, giving more children the opportunity to learn about new languages and cultures.

The program is part of a $34.6 million Australian Government investment in the Teacher Resources Hubs from 2025 to 2029, which offers curriculum-aligned and evidence-based resources for teachers and families.
