It's National Science Week 2025!

How will you science this National Science Week? 9-17 August 2025 scienceweek.net.au

Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology returns this August, running from 9-17 August.

Each year more than 3 million Australians participate in National Science Week, a nationwide celebration of innovation and discovery. With over 2,000 events held across the country, the initiative engages adults and children through a diverse range of activities. Universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres host events in-person and online celebrating opportunities and advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The week serves to inspire curiosity, promote learning and highlight the critical role of STEM in shaping Australia’s future.

How does the Department of Education support STEM?

The Department of Education remains committed to increasing Australia’s STEM-skilled workforce through opportunities to learn and study. The Australian Government works closely with states and territories to support STEM education, funding a range of initiatives for schools, teachers, students, and carers and families, starting from early years through to schooling and higher education. Initiatives include:

During the week, the department is highlighting Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) Innovate grants, which offer funding to support the commercialisation of breakthrough research in priority areas including quantum technology. Researchers at The University of Adelaide are working on a project to improve quantum sensors to increase sensitivity, accuracy and security across a wide range of applications, including underwater and underground activity that is undetectable by conventional technology. This will position Australian-developed technologies at the global forefront of quantum sensing, while delivering economic wealth and well-paying jobs in a field of critical national importance.

How do I get involved in National Science Week?

For schools, this year’s theme is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. This is a fun opportunity for teachers and students to explore the fundamental languages of nature, including the groundbreaking field of quantum science, with plenty of resources available to get involved.

There are plenty of local events in your state and territory, so make sure to check out activities happening in your area: Find Events - National Science Week.
