Get help to study overseas: OS-HELP

You can get a loan of up to $7,998 for travel and other costs if you want to study part of your higher education overseas.

This type of support is called an OS-HELP loan.

If your overseas study is under a formal exchange agreement, you can also get help to cover your university or higher education fees.

If your overseas study is not under a formal exchange agreement, you can’t get a loan to cover your tuition fees.

You can still get OS-HELP if your study is not under a formal exchange agreement.

What you can get

You can use an OS-HELP loan to pay for airfares, accommodation and other travel or study expenses.

You can get:

  • $6,665
  • or $7,998 if you will be studying in Asia — plus $1,065 if you want to study a language for your trip.

You can get one OS-HELP loan in a six-month study period. You can get up to two OS-HELP loans in total.

If you want to study an Asian language for your trip

See the list of Asian countries where you can get extra OS-HELP.

This includes where you can go to get the extra $1,065 for language study.

If you want to study an Asian language for your trip

Your study must be before the trip to apply for the extra $1,065.

Your provider must approve your language study.

You can’t apply for the extra amount if your Asian language study is part of your undergraduate course.

The extra amount does not count toward your limit of two OS-HELP loans.
