Quality Schools

The Australian Government's Quality Schools package will make Commonwealth school funding transparent, consistent and needs-based. It will ensure that students with the same need in the same sector will attract the same level of support from the Commonwealth.

The amended Australian Education Act 2013 will deliver an additional $23.4 billion in funding for Australian schools over the next 10 years, bringing total Commonwealth recurrent funding to $247.2 billion over that period. This provides long term funding certainty for parents, schools and education authorities.

Commonwealth recurrent funding will grow from $17.5 billion in 2017 to $30.6 billion in 2027.

This funding growth means schools will be able to continue and expand successful programs to support improved outcomes.

Frequently asked questions are available now.

Building on Quality Schools, Quality Outcomes, released in May 2016, the Quality Schools package ensures Commonwealth funding will be tied to reforms to support better outcomes for students. It will also require state and territory governments to deliver their share of a total public funding level of at least 95 per cent of the Schooling Resource Standard for all schools by 2023.

The Government's reform agenda will be informed by the Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools, chaired by Mr David Gonski AC. The Review will examine evidence and make recommendations on the most effective teaching and learning strategies and initiatives to be deployed. The Review will report to the Prime Minister and Minister Birmingham by March 2018.

The School Funding Estimator is currently being updated to reflect the Australian Education Amendment Bill 2017 passed by the Australian Parliament on 23 June 2017.
