Online Assessments

The Australian Government is committed to working with states and territories and non-government education authorities to ensure there is a national approach to online assessment, including delivering NAPLAN online.

Online delivery holds many benefits for students and teachers over the current paper-based testing.

The benefits of online assessments

Online assessment offers significant benefits including the potential to provide a more accurate measurement of student achievement, increased accessibility, and faster results. It can also provide teachers with vital diagnostic information that they can use in the classroom.

Some of these benefits are already starting to be realised through ‘Improve’ – an online assessment tool available to all Australian teachers.

The Australian Government is investing $24.7 million to develop a national platform that will enable students to undertake NAPLAN testing online.

When will my school do NAPLAN online?

The transition to online assessment will be a phased approach. Jurisdictions, school systems and schools, will determine their timing to online testing based on readiness.

The first NAPLAN online test will be delivered in May 2018, on an opt-in basis for schools that are ready. The remaining schools will transition to NAPLAN online by 2019.
