The funding totals $452.3 million and means every child will continue to have access to a preschool program (also referred to as kindergarten in some states) for 600 hours (15 hours a week) until the end of 2021.
Preschool is primarily a state and territory responsibility and preschool systems vary across jurisdictions.
By providing this funding to states and territories, the Australian Government has committed to continuing funding arrangements that have achieved significant improvements in preschool participation, while ensuring national consistency in the number of hours available.
This extension, along with the funding already committed for the 2020 calendar year, provides continuity for the preschool sector as Australia deals with the impacts of COVID-19.
This investment will benefit around 350,000 children participating in more than 11,000 preschool services, bringing the total Commonwealth investment in preschool since 2014 to $3.2 billion.
