National Collaborative Research Infrastructure

For:

The Australian Government supports national collaborative research infrastructure that enables Australian researchers to deliver lasting returns to the Australian community.

Australian researchers can now access infrastructure and networks necessary for world-class research in areas such as the marine and life sciences, nanotechnology, and astronomy.

Ongoing support for the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy Research Infrastructure in the National Innovation and Science Agenda

The Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda is putting the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) on a sustainable footing for the first time by providing $1.5 billion over 10 years for this important program. A strong research system, which includes cutting edge research infrastructure, is the engine room for the nation’s innovation system. Building on the Government’s commitment of $150 million each year for 2015-16 and 2016-17, funding of $153.5 million will be provided in 2017-18 and on an ongoing basis, indexed for inflation. It provides a long-term, sustainable operational base for NCRIS to continue support world class science and research in Australia, and will enable us to plan for investments into the future.

Along with the investment in NCRIS the National Innovation and Science Agenda also provides funding of $519.8 million over ten years for the Australian Synchrotron and $293.7 million over 10 years for Australia’s commitment to the Square Kilometre Array.

Further information on research infrastructure measures under the National Innovation and Science Agenda can be found at innovation.gov.au

Funded Projects

The Australian Government has applied a national collaborative approach in supporting research infrastructure. Further information on all current and past funded research infrastructure projects is available.

Funding programs

The Australian Government’s support for research infrastructure was developed through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and related initiatives and aims to encourage collaboration between the research sector, industry and government to conduct world-class research. Funding support is being provided as follows:

National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS)

Currently provides funding to support the operation of national research infrastructure and accessed on a merit basis.

Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme (CRIS)

Currently provides funding to support the operations of priority projects during the 2013 and 2014 calendar years.

Super Science Initiative

Provided capital funding for research infrastructure that makes a lasting contribution to Australian science.

Education Investment Fund (EIF)

Provided funding for infrastructure that transforms Australian tertiary education and research.

Review of Research Infrastructure

The Minister for Education and Training has established the Review of Research Infrastructure to advise the Australian Government on critical research infrastructure to support research.

The Terms of Reference for the Review are available and details of Panel membership are also available

Enquiries regarding the Review should be directed to researchinfrastructure@education.gov.au

International collaboration

The Department of Education supports research infrastructure links between Australia and other countries. This includes practical activities such as research infrastructure workshops with the European Union. Australian also participates in international policy through the OECD Global Science Forum, the International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI) and the Research Data Alliance. Further information on international collaboration is available.
