Nanny Pilot Programme

The Nanny Pilot Programme will cease on 1 July 2018.

From 2 July 2018, Australia will have a New Child Care Package.

A new care type will replace the existing Nanny Pilot Programme and In Home Care program. Further information is available

The new In Home Care will replace the existing Nanny Pilot Programme and In Home Care program, and aligns with the key elements of the new child care package. In Home Care supports families’ workforce participation and early childhood education and care requirements where other approved child care services are not available or appropriate.

The Nanny Pilot Programme will run until 30 June 2018 and provides financial support to help parents cover the cost of using a nanny. Applications for the pilot are now closed.

An independent evaluation of the Nanny Pilot Programme has been undertaken to help the Government develop future policy for care provided in the family home. The reports can be found here – Interim Key Findings report and Key Findings report

Am I eligible for the Nanny Pilot?

The Nanny Pilot Programme is no longer taking on new families.

Families are eligible for the Nanny Pilot if:

  • they earn a combined annual income of less than $250,000,
  • both parents are engaged in work, study or training for at least eight hours per fortnight (unless they are exempt),
  • and at least one parent is an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Children receiving a subsidy under the program must have received all vaccines required for their age or be on a catch-up schedule as per the National Immunisation Program.

Nanny requirements

To be able to participate in the program, nannies must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • hold a current working with children check in the state or territory they intend to work
  • hold a current first aid qualification
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or hold a relevant visa classification that allows 12 months or more continuous employment
  • not be related to the children who will be in their care.

Service providers will engage nannies through a robust process that includes an interview, verifying their claims and assessing their application and referee reports.

Nanny Pilot subsidy

The Nanny Pilot Subsidy assists with the cost of a nanny who cares for children aged up to 13 years (or to the end of primary school, whichever comes last) except in special circumstances.

Under the subsidy, the Australian Government provides money to the Nanny Pilot service providers which then reduce the fees for the cost of using a nanny to families in the pilot.

The subsidy is not intended to fully cover the cost of a nanny. Service providers will provide families with a fee schedule that will identify the total cost of the nanny per hour.

The maximum subsidy is $8.50 per child per hour for families earning up to $60,000 reducing to a minimum subsidy of $5.00 per child per hour for families earning between $165,000 and $250,000.

Families can receive up to 100 hours of subsidised care (including any other approved child care the child is accessing) per child per fortnight. The number of hours depends on the parents' level of work, training and study activity per fortnight:

  • 8 to 16 hours: eligible for up to 36 hours of care
  • 16 hours to 48 hours: eligible for up to 72 hours of care
  • More than 48 hours: eligible for up to 100 hours of care

Where there are two parents, the number of subsidised hours was be based on the parent who undertook the lesser amount of activity per fortnight.

Further information is available on the Subsidies for families page.
