Environmental Sustainability in Manufacturing

This 26 minute DVD, Environmental Sustainability in Manufacturing, is an introduction to the concepts and language of environmental sustainability in Australian manufacturing.

Sustaining the environment is crucial to the future of our planet, our children and our industries.

The first two chapters in the DVD explain in simple terms, greenhouse gases, global warming, climate change, our carbon footprint, renewable and non-renewable resources, over consumption and the 5Rs – refuse, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.

The remaining nine chapters are three case studies in Australian manufacturing and the steps the people in these businesses took to successfully implement environmentally sustainable activities into their every day life - at work and at home.

The DVD’s 12 chapters are:

  • The environment and you
  • Sustainability in the workplace
  • Introduction to case studies
  • Waste management
  • The 5 R s
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Transport
  • Hazardous materials
  • Get the message out
  • Goals and targets
  • Why we do this.

The accompanying CD contains a Trainer’s Guide with customisable Learners’ Worksheets and PowerPoint. The PowerPoint can be used by the trainer in conjunction with the DVD to focus learners on key points and can be customised to a particular enterprise, so that training can be made relevant to the specific context of the learners.

This is a self-contained resource which provides an introduction to the language of sustainability and a range of environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices. Its purpose is:

  • To assist employees at operator level to achieve a level of understanding and familiarity with the concepts and terminology of sustainable manufacturing, sufficient to enable them to participate in discussion, further learning and action in the area.
  • To generate commitment to their own enterprise’s efforts to improve its environmentally sustainable practices.

The resource may be used to support delivery of the unit MSAENV272B Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices from the MSA07 Manufacturing Training Package, or it may be used as a stand-alone resource without reference to the unit.

As many Training Packages have now incorporated the MSAENV272B Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices unit as a core in their qualifications, workers, apprentices and trainees from a range of different industries will benefit from this resource through their understanding of the need for environmental sustainability in their daily working life.

Overdrive

Overdrive: a multimedia resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are working (or are interested in working) in automotive retail, service and repair industry

New South Wales TAFE Access Division has produced Overdrive, a three part kit to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students learn about the automotive industry. The resource supports language, literacy and numeracy skills related to units of competency from the Automotive Retail, Service and Repair Training Package. The three parts of the kit are inter-related and include a CD ROM, a workbook and a teacher's guide.

CD-ROM

The CD ROM takes you to Ted's workshop, where you must navigate your way around, completing jobs on cars, under the watchful eye of the senior mechanic. While the graphics and sound are great, I found following the arrow through the different parts of the virtual 3D workshop, (a bit like a real estate agent virtual tour), frustrating and very hit and miss in terms of uncovering the activities I was supposed to complete.

Workbook

The workbook on the other hand is very straightforward and easy to follow and includes information and activities relating to job cards, customer service, written instructions, phone messages, completing forms, tables and service manuals and using the Internet.

Teacher's notes

The teacher's notes include a grid detailing which units of competency the resource addresses, and an indication of what levels of language and literacy are required for each competency mapped against NRS levels and communication aspects. Overall this is a useful resource for initial training in the automotiveFixed typo industry.
