It all adds up: numeracy skills for community care

This DVD has been designed to assist home care workers with aspects of their work that involve:

  • numeracy
  • including reading rosters and timesheets
  • using maps
  • calculating travel time and travel claims
  • making sense of parking signs
  • calculating parking fees.

Research indicates that many carers find some of these tasks difficult because of the length of time since they last studied, their having language difficulties or their being from a non-English speaking background. The DVD can be used flexibly, either in a formal group training setting or by individual learners under the guidance of a mentor.

Just Like You: A guide to etiquette and communication with people with a disability

This 23 minute DVD features a number of people who offer information and advice on how to communicate effectively and appropriately with people with disabilities. The message, clear and simple, is that people with disabilities would like the same courtesies able bodied people expect extended to them - each of those who feature on the DVD explain why personal questions, invasion of personal space and insensitive remarks and ignorant assumptions are inappropriate. This DVD could be used in a number of ways - it is both instructional for groups or centres wanting to ensure all members of its wider community are treated with respect. It also makes excellent resource material for learning programs wanting to generate critical discussion on how 'difference' is perceived and acted on in the community.
