Increased Higher Education Loan Program loan limit for some aviation courses

Students undertaking eligible aviation courses, with census dates after 1 January 2020, that lead to a commercial pilot licence qualification will be able to access an increased Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loan limit of $150,000.

Currently (2019), the FEE-HELP limit for students studying medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science courses is $150,000, and $104,440 for all other students. On 1 January 2020, the FEE-HELP limit will become the combined HELP loan limit (which will be indexed) and include new HECS-HELP borrowing.

The eligible aviation courses will include the diploma and advanced diploma courses in aviation listed in the VET Student Loans (Courses and Loan Caps) Determination 2016 that are undertaken through a VET Student Loans approved provider.

The initiative was announced in the 2019-20 Federal Budget and is subject to the passage of legislation.
