The Higher Education Data Committee provides advice to the department on the development of improved higher education data collections and other matters pertaining to the collection and dissemination of higher education data.
As part of the 2014-15 Budget, the department secured funding over four years through the ‘Upholding Quality – Enhancing HEIMS’ measure to create a higher education datamart. This will provide a single point of access to various higher education data collections and enable the government to implement several recommendations from the Review of Reporting Requirements for Universities.
The Higher Education Data Committee comprises representatives from the department, TEQSA, the Australian Research Council, Universities Australia, the Australian Council for Private Education and Training, the Council of Private Higher Education, the Australian Network of University Planners, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Committee will work with States and Territories in development of the datamart to ensure it meets the needs of all governments.
On 10 October 2014, COAG agreed that in accordance with the deregulation agenda, all jurisdictions will ensure information is not already available before requesting data, so that universities only need to provide higher education data to government once. This will occur through the Higher Education Data Committee, which will act as a higher education data clearing house for the Commonwealth and States and Territories.
