1. How do I receive an RTS place?
Domestic students undertaking a higher degree by research at an Australian university may be eligible to receive a RTS funded place. RTS students are currently exempt from payment of the student contribution amounts and tuition fees for units undertaken as part of a higher degree by research course of study.
RTS students are entitled to a maximum of two years full-time equivalent for a research masters degree and four years full-time equivalent for a research doctorate degree. The eligibility criteria for the RTS are available in the RTS Conditions of Grant . There is no grant application process. It is up to the individual university to determine which students will receive support and the processes by which this support is managed. Contact the research office at your university for advice on support options available.
2. Can I receive a second RTS funded place?
The Other Grants Guidelines (Research) 2012 and RTS Conditions of Grant do not exclude a student from a RTS funded place for a new higher degree by research following completion of their previous degree. It is the intention of the guidelines that the individual university is best placed to decide which students are to be supported within the limits of the RTS funds available.
3. I withdrew from my research doctorate or research masters and now wish to recommence the degree. Does my RTS consumption reset?
Sections 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 of the RTS Conditions of Grant provide direction on the resumption of a higher degree by research at the same level (at the same or different university) following withdrawal from a previous enrolment. If at least three years have elapsed since the previous enrolment, the student is entitled to the maximum period allowed for the course under the RTS. If fewer than three years have elapsed since the previous enrolment, the student is entitled to the maximum period allowed for the course under the RTS less any period of prior entitlement consumed.
4. Where can I find more information about the RTS?
Further information about the RTS eligibility and conditions can be found on the Research Training Scheme page.
