Improving the quality of assessment in VET

For:

At the 20 November 2015 meeting of the COAG Industry and Skills Council it was agreed the Australian Government Minister for Vocational Education and Skills consult with VET stakeholders and all jurisdictions on reform options to improve assessment in VET.

Priority areas for investigation are approaches to strengthening the skills of VET trainers and assessors, consideration of improved validation of assessment, including potential for greater industry involvement, and options for tougher regulatory interventions.

To support this consultation process, the Quality of assessment in vocational education and training – Discussion Paper was released in January 2016 to seek stakeholder views on reforms to improve the conduct of assessment in VET. The submission process closed on 11 March 2016.

Responses received to the paper will inform the Working Group’s advice to the Minister on options to improve assessment in VET. The Minister will then report back for the COAG Industry and Skills Council’s further consideration on actions to be taken.

Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training, established the Training and Assessment Working Group in September 2015 to consult with industry and provide advice to the Australian Government Minister on options to improve the conduct of assessment in VET.
