  • NCVER invites research applications
    • The National Centre of Vocational Education Research (NCVER), on behalf of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, invites interested researchers to submit proposals under the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) Analysis Grants Program for funding in an open category. This open category offers researchers the opportunity to put forward proposals for research that will draw primarily on LSAY data, using its longitudinal nature, to inform policy on youth transitions. Proposals must be submitted by 8 October 2008.

  • State and Territory E-learning Innovations projects released
    • The Australian Flexible Learning Framework has released the Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that have successfully applied for 2008 E-learning Innovations funding for projects about e-learning tailored for local education and training priorities.

  • Major restructure of Victorian TAFE fees
    • The Victorian Government has announced significant changes to the Victorian TAFE fees structure. While basic literacy and numeracy courses will cost less, the fees for diplomas and advanced diplomas will rise. Caps on courses will be removed, and and an increase in training places is promised to supply more TAFE teachers in Victoria.

  • Rudd Government supports Victorian changes to VET
    • The Commonwealth is taking steps to support the Victorian Government's reforms to the VET system by the introduction of an Income Contingent Loan (ICL) scheme for government subsidised diplomas and advanced diploma students. The administrative charges of this scheme will also be met by the Federal Government so that cost is not a barrier to students.

  • Virtual labs introduced into training programs
    • Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec)in New Zealand has purchased a highly sophisticated Autotronics Lab with simulated automotive diagnostic capabilities. A Virtual Spray Painting Simulator has also recently been purchased.

  • Nominations open for Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year
    • The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence has opened nominations for the 2008 Trade and Skills Teacher of the Year award. There are also subcategories for outstanding trade teachers in the areas of automotive, building and construction, electrical, hospitality and personal services, manufacturing, metals and engineering, mineral resources and rural and farming industries. Prizes of $5,000 dollars each will be award to the winners of each subcategory. One overall winner will be selected from this group as Australian Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year at the Australian Training Awards in Darwin on 20 November 2008.
