- Child care is set for a major shakeup with not-for-profit operator C&K saying it will cut ratios in its nurseries next year
to one carer for every three babies. It comes after Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education Maxine McKew announced

- Leading children's author Mem Fox has drawn criticism from working mothers but qualified support from family groups for likening
child care for babies to child abuse. The 62 year-old author of books such as Possum Magic, Koala Lou and Where Is the Green
Sheep said she believed society would look back on the trend of putting infants in child care and wonder 'how could we have
allowed that child abuse to happen'. The Australian Family Association said it was 'largely supportive' of her comments.

- All new childcare centres would be put on 'P-plates' for up to two years and the number of babies looked after by any one
carer may be reduced from five to three under an overhaul of early childhood education being considered by the Federal Government.
The plan would introduce provisional licensing for all new childcare centres, which would have to prove they were committed
to childhood development and show they were able to hire, retain and continue to train staff. Sydney Morning Herald Online,

in remote Northern Territory communities. Announcing $2.28 million in federal funds to support the program, NT Chief Minister
Paul Henderson said the trial would focus on the formative primary years. The trial program is designed to involve parents
and the whole community in a child's education well before they start school. National Indigenous Times, 29 August 2008.
