    The NSW Aboriginal Education and Training Strategy 2006-2008 is a comprehensive response to the NSW Aboriginal Education Review. The Strategy incorporates actions to build on other successful inititaives that are already in place to strengthen the learning outcomes of Aboriginal students. The Strategy has been designed to focus the work of schools, colleges, regions, TAFE Institutes and state office directorates towards achieving the goal that by 2012, Aboriginal student outcomes will match or better outcomes of the broader student population.

    This NSW Department of Education and Training plan explains how the department will increase Aboriginal staff across all levels in the workforce, build the skills of Aboriginal staff, and support all staff to have a stronger understanding of Aboriginal peoples and their cultures. In doing so, they aim to improve the educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. The webpage has the plan to download, a community information brochure and an implementation guide.

    The purpose of the ABSTUDY scheme is to address the particular educational disadvantages faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by improving educational outcomes to a level commensurate with the Australian population in general.     This paper provides recommendations to focus national effort in Indigenous education over the 2005-2008 quadrennium. The recommendations seek to accelerate the pace of change by engaging Indigenous children and young people in learning. They are systemic as engagement will not occur, or be sustained, unless Indigenous education is 'built in' to become an integral part of core business. The recommendations align with five domains in which engagement is critical: early childhood education; school and community educational partnerships; school leadership; quality teaching; and pathways to training, employment and higher education.

    Bound for Success is an education strategy aimed at increasing opportunities for Torres Strait Islander children and young people. The strategy aims to engage as many Torres Strait Islander children as possible in early education, ensure all Indigenous students receive a grounding in literacy and numeracy so as many students as possible go on to secondary school, and help Indigenous students to complete Year 12 or its equivalent.

    The Queensland Government has committed to implementing the Cape York welfare reform trial, in partnership with the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership and the Commonwealth Government. The trial aims to restore social norms and local authority and change behaviours in response to chronic levels of welfare dependency, social dysfunction and economic exclusion in certain communities. Among the triggers to bring a person before the Family Responsibilities Commission will be if the person's child has three absences in a school term without reasonable excuse or a child is not enrolled in school without lawful excuse.

    The South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) is committed to a substantial improvement in the educational outcomes of its Aboriginal children and students. The DECS Aboriginal Education Strategy 2005-2010 provides an outline of targets and priority actions for the period. It is organised under 4 key focus areas: More Innovative and Cohesive Services; Participation, Retention and Attendance; Literacy and Numeracy; and Culturally Appropriate Curriculum and Teaching.
