    The International Co-operation Branch of the AEI is responsible for building co-operative relationships internationally, and for the development of policy advice on the internationalisation of Australia's education, science and training. To fulfil this role the Branch undertakes research and analysis, develops policy advice and manages a number of key activities, including: high level agreements with priority countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region; bilateral and multilateral dialogue and collaborative projects; participation in multilateral fora such as APEC, SEAMEO, OECD, UNESCO and WTO; and participation in reciprocal visits of Ministers and senior officials and participation in strategic regional events.

    The Brisbane Communique initiative was launched at the inaugural Asia-Pacific Education Ministers' Meeting in Brisbane, in April 2006. Ministers and senior officials from twenty-seven countries across the region issued the Brisbane Communique in which they agreed to collaborate on key goals related to the recognition and quality of education and training in the region.     The Ministerial Round Table on Education and Economic Development at the 34th session of the UNESCO General Conference, 19-20 October 2007 issued this Communque. Member States call on UNESCO to strengthen multi-stakeholder co-operation in education; to initiate a reflection process on the roles of the State and other stakeholders in private sector initiatives in quality education; give particular attention to least developed countries (LCDs) and to reinforce its coordination role in the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), in Education for All (EFA) and the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD).
