This report extends the analysis presented in 2004 National Drug Strategy Household Survey: First Results by providing more detailed information on drug use prevalence, drug-related behaviours and incidents, and support for drug-related policy and legislation. The report features analysis relating to young people, reflecting the inclusion in the 2004 survey of 12-13 year-olds, and new material on mental and physical health. This report, along with others in the Drug Statistics Series, will be a useful resource for policy-makers, planners and researchers interested in drug-related matters.

The benchmarks that underpin the reporting of student achievement describe nationally agreed minimum acceptable standards for aspects of literacy and numeracy at particular year levels.

International students studying in Australia contribute significantly to Australia's economy through payment of tuition fees and expenditure on goods and services over the period of their stay. This report presents results of an Australian Education International (AEI) survey to investigate and quantify the expenditure by international students on goods and services (other than tuition fees) over the four educational sub-sectors (higher education, vocational education and training, secondary schools, and English language intensive courses for overseas students (ELICOS)).

The report is the result of an Australian APEC project aimed at increasing knowledge of the domestic education systems of participating APEC economies and assisting all economies in the region with systemic education reform. The report is specifically aimed at the building of an internationally competitive education services sector, with benefits that may include enhanced capacity for education policy development and implementation; increased access to quality education services; development of a broader, internationally focussed curriculum; promotion of innovative mechanisms for the delivery of education services; increased transparency of 'best practice' in provision of education services; development of internationally competitive labour forces; and enhanced understanding of cultures within the region.

The report is a synthesis of recent Australian and international research on the attitudes of teachers, students and parents to teaching as a career. The research shows that, while people who have chosen teaching as a career are chiefly motivated by 'intrinsic' rewards such as wanting to 'make a difference', enjoyment of children, etc, extrinsic factors such as remuneration, workload, employment conditions and status are the most significant factors influencing people not to choose teaching, and to leave the profession.
