This paper begins with a section on the origins and development of school educaton in NSW and goes on to make the following points: evidence exists of differences, in levels of achievement, between country and city students in New South Wales; governments have attempted to respond, to perceived differences in performance, by instituting programs to enhance achievement; researchers have pointed to high staff turnover as a contributing factor to differences in performance, between country and city students; retaining students, to year 12, appears to be a particular issue in providing education to students in rural areas.

The Ministerial Advisory Committee's Hearing Student Voices project investigated issues of importance to students with disabilities. This included their experiences of schooling and their participation in decision-making, not only in relation to themselves but also the broader environment of school and community. Information was collected from a total of 52 students attending ten discussion groups. Students with physical, hearing, vision, intellectual, communication and language impairment, from the range of educational settings (mainstream, special class, special unit and special school) contributed to this project. The following major issues emerged from the data: harrassment; support from teaching staff; teaching and learning; and peer support.

There are gender differences in achievement, engagement, motivation, and students' attitudes to school and schoolwork. Many of these show that boys perform more poorly than girls (eg. in literacy, achievement, retention, completion of school, and motivation). There are, however, areas in which boys are not under-performing girls (eg. numeracy).
