This paper describes the agrifood industry in the macro, industry and vocational education and training (VET) environments. It identifies and lists labour and skills shortages which exist in rural and related industry, racing, seafood, meat, food processing, and across industry workers (business managers, research technicians and scientists). Job roles are evolving in two areas: higher level skills to complete tasks more efficiently, and technical knowledge to understand the supply chain; and supplementary skills across a wider range of functions to support the core roles.

This environmental scan by the Transport and Logistics Industry has been developed as an information resource for Skills Australia and the Australian Government in their overall planning for workforce development. Current and emerging skills gaps are: truck drivers, store persons, bus and coach drivers, train drivers, forklift drivers, rolling stock and motive power unit maintenance staff. safety officers, and logistics management. An increase in skill levels can be developed by upgrading qualifications of existing workers; attracting workers in industries allied to transport and logistics, attract retiring defence personnel, and develop pathways for entry into the industry for school leavers, people from non-English speaking backgrounds, and others.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) wrote this paper about future directions following the IBSA National Search Conference 2007. The aim is to build the innovative capability of the Australian workforce by leadership, identify best practice nationally and internationally, and share knowledge with enterprises and VET providers.
