This study highlights the effects of gender, home language, ethnicity, geographic location, family and financial resources on the literacy development of young children.     This report extends the analysis presented in 2004 National Drug Strategy Household Survey: First Results by providing more detailed information on drug use prevalence, drug-related behaviours and incidents, and support for drug-related policy and legislation. The report features analysis relating to young people, reflecting the inclusion in the 2004 survey of 12-13 year-olds, and new material on mental and physical health. This report, along with others in the Drug Statistics Series, will be a useful resource for policy-makers, planners and researchers interested in drug-related matters.

    Bullying in schools has become an issue of major importance among educators. However, interventions to reduce bullying have enjoyed only modest and limited success. Ken Rigby examines five different explanations for bullying. Each has had some impact on school policies and practices. The strengths and limitations of the different explanations are examined. It is concluded that none of them provides a comprehensive explanation for school-based bullying and that their value lies especially in suggesting actions that may be taken by schools in addressing particular bully/victim problems.

    This report uses several identification strategies and panel data from the two main U.S. datasets that include recent information on computer ownership among children, to explore the causal relationship between computer ownership and high school graduation and other educational outcomes. The study generally finds evidence of positive relationships between home computers and educational outcomes. Home computers may increase high school graduation by reducing non-productive activities, such as truancy and crime, among children in addition to making it easier to complete school assignments.

    This research project aimed to improve student numeracy outcomes through the development of a whole-school approach that links a comprehensive assessment regime with numeracy teaching and learning that could be applied across the whole school. A variety of alternative modes of assessment were used including Checklists, Student Journals, Interviews, Portfolios and Work Samples, Observations, Use of Rubrics to Assess Problem Solving, Assessment of Attitudes as well as widening the scope and formats of Written Tests. Funded by the Australian Government, the ACT Department of Education and Training (DET), the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Catholic Education Office (CEO), and the Association of Independent Schools (AIS) of the ACT, in partnership with the University of Tasmania.
